Absences Click Here to Report An Absence If you know your child is going to be absent, please let me know as soon as possible, whether it is due to a trip or sickness. There are forms in the office you can fill out for educational trips. Please be sure to fill it out before your child misses school. If you are sick or have an appointment, you can send an e-mail (karlae.endemann@cms.k12.nc.us ) and copy the secretary ([email protected]) as well. Dojo messages are NOT acceptable. If you are unable to e-mail, a note the following day upon your child's return with reason for absence is expected. If your family will be taking a trip and learning will take place, you can request an excused absence form from the office or find it on the MPTS website. Please request the excused absence two weeks prior to the trip.
Birthday Celebrations Children may wish to celebrate their birthday with their classmates. This can be done during lunch. All food items must be ordered through the cafeteria. Use this link to find and download the order form http://schools.cms.k12.nc.us/myersparkES/Pages/SchoolResources.aspx or contact [email protected]. We are NOT permitted to send home ANY birthday invitations. This is a new policy. Any invitations sent to school will be returned.
Breakfast Your child can eat breakfast at school each morning before 9:15. Your child should report directly to the cafeteria upon arriving at school if they wish to eat breakfast. Do not come to the classroom first.
Chaperones for Field Trips Chaperones for field trips must be CMS registered volunteers. Register by following this link www.cmsvolunteers.com to be eligible to be a chaperone. You must apply as a volunteer EACH year. I will select different chaperones from the approved list of parents in the class prior to each field trip. Please DO NOT pay as a volunteer/chaperone until I have confirmed with you that you are the chaperone for that trip. We need to allow all parents a fair opportunity to serve as chaperones. We CANNOT refund any money for any reason.
Communication A successful year will be the result of great communication between teachers, parents, and students. The best way for you to see what is going on in class is through Dojo, this website and our weekly newsletter. The best way for you to reach me is through Dojo or my email at [email protected] . Conferences will be held during the month of October and I will send out a sign up link via Dojo.
Dismissal All car riders must use the carpool procedure. All early dismissals must be signed out by 3:30 in the office. Please sign up for the Remind App for bus riders by going to this link for directions http://schools.cms.k12.nc.us/myersparkES/Documents/Remind%20App%20Instructions.pdf
Dress Code Please send your child to school in comfortable clothes and shoes everyday. For safety reasons, flip flops are not allowed to be worn at MPTS. We go outside everyday unless there is inclement weather. Tennis shoes/sneakers are required on PE days. The temperature in the classroom is not within our control. Therefore, if your child gets cold easily, please send a sweater or sweatshirt for your child to wear.
MPTS has a dress code. Boys need to have their pants at their waists held with a belt. Girls need to have shorts and skirts that are at finger tip length when standing and shirt straps that are at least three fingers wide.
Email My email address is karlae.endemann@cms.k12.nc.us . This is the easiest way for you to communicate with me is on class Dojo. I usually check my email before school and/or afterschool.
Field Trips Field trips MUST be paid for in cash or online only this year. Money will be collected on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday ONLY. Please contact me if you are interested in chaperoning a field trip. I must confirm you as a chaperone before you pay as one. There are a limited number of people and tickets for each location and we need to be mindful of this. You MUST be a registered CMS volunteer to chaperone field trips. Remind your child to wear our class T-shirt on these days! Online payment of field trips will be offered again this year for a discount. Paying for field trips in this manner greatly reduces my paperwork and allows me to spend more time with your child. To learn more about the program

Communication Folders for our classroom are orange this year. These folders are sent home nightly, even weekends, as a communication tool between parent and the school. Please check it daily. Put all notes, field trip forms, and money (Mon/Wed/Fri only) in the homeroom folder. Please send a note to school with your child if:
1. Regular transportation changes. Dismissal changes must be confirmed with a note or an email to the school. Students will not be sent home differently, unless a note is provided.
2. Your child is absent from school.
3. Your child must leave school early. A parent must sign the child out in the office. This must be done prior to 3:30 p.m.
4. There is a situation that might affect your child. (ie. ill family member, move, personal crisis, etc.)
I will teach your child what to do with the contents of their folder at school and you need to do the same by making it their responsibility to show the folder to you every day and pack it in their book bag each night.
Grading More information to come at Curriculum Night.
Homework Your child is expected to read EVERY night for 15 minutes. This will be recorded on a reading log. If your child cannot yet read on his or her own, you may read with your child and record it on the reading log. If your child does not finish work in the classroom, it will be sent home to finish, and should be returned the following day.
Independence This is the year of independence for your child. It is important your child walks to our classroom without parental assistance and takes responsibility for his/her belongings both at school and at home.
Leader of the Week In first grade, Leaders of the Week are determined by peer classroom nominations and student votes. Students have the opportunity to nominate fellow classmates that they have observed following the 7 Habits of Leadership.
Lunch You are more than welcome to come eat with your child in the cafeteria. Your child may choose 1 friend to eat with them. Our lunch time is from 11:15-11:40.
Math Our school uses a math program called enVisionmath 3.0. This program is very student-centered, so it uses hands-on manipulatives and problem solving skills.
Nametags Students will be issued a picture ID nametage at the beginning of the school year.
Office Numbers Should you need to call the school for any reason, our office phone number is 980-343-5522 and our fax number is 980-343-5518.
Student Alerts MPTS implements a school-wide positive behavior plan. Students are given reminders throughout the day if behavior does not meet expectations. After several warnings, a student may be given a Student Alert. After discussing the situation with your child, please sign the form and return it to school. Once a child receives three student alerts in a quarter, he/she will not be allowed to attend that quarter's Gold Level Celebration.
PTA Please join the PTA and get involved with what is going on in our school. I already joined and so should you! There are many opportunities to volunteer and show your child that you too value what is going on here. I'd love for our class to have 100% participation!
Reading Reading is very important and should be done daily. There are various ways you can help at home. If your child becomes frustrated, take turns reading with him or her and make sure the book is on their independent reading level. Question your child about the characters and the events in the story.
Report Cards Report cards come home every 9 weeks. This is an opportunity to look for growth experiences for your child in both academics and behavior. You keep the report card and only sign and return the envelope.
Snacks Students are allow to have snack in the afternoon. Please be sure to send in a small healthy snack, fruit, crackers, granola bar, etc. Please write your child's name on their snack. No drinks please. We work through snack time and often have books and papers on our desks. Students can get drinks from the water fountain in our classroom at any time. Students may not bring in snacks for others or share snacks due to allergies.
Supplies Please bring your child's supplies with you to Open House and leave them on their desk. This will help me get them organized and put in their proper place before the first day of school AND your child won't have to worry with carrying them into school.
Toys Unless you receive a note about a special game day or homework assignment, toys should not be brought to school for any reason. If a child is found playing with a toy during class, it will be confiscated, placed in the June box and be returned at the end of the school year.
T-Shirts Our class orders t-shirts (just like Kindergarten). An order form will be sent home at the beginning of the year. Please be sure to send exact cash only, as this money goes directly to the company we purchase from and not through the office.
Transportation It is a school policy to send a note anytime your child's transportation changes. It is important to me as well as your child that we have documentation of how they are getting home each day. I cannot rely on your first grader to tell me how they are getting home. If you forget to send a note in their homework folder you can e-mail [email protected] or [email protected] before 3:00 and they will notify me. DO NOT send me an e-mail because I may not get the message until after dismissal.
Visitors The Myers Park Staff welcomes you to visit and is delighted to have you involved in your child's education. Please be sure to contact me to set up a time to visit. You need to sign in and out at the front office. They will give you a nametag. We ask in advance that you be considerate of our lessons and realize this is not an opportune time for a conference.
Volunteers I would love to have you volunteer to help in my classroom, but you must be registered with CMS. You must do this each and every year in order to be approved as a CMS volunteer. To do so, follow this link: www.cmsvolunteers.com
Website If you are here, you have found my website. I will update the home page as needed, but at least monthly. Upcoming events will always be listed on the home page. Please look through all of the pages to receive all of the information you need to have a successful first grade year!
